Test Equipment FAQ

1. When using a Skypeaker+ the best way to read the meter is to adjust the sensitivity so the needle is in the middle of the display. At that point any adjustment you make will be visible whether it is good or bad. Remember that a movement towards the black is bad.
2. On the Skypeaker Trio the LED display indicates the signal. If you have 5 LEDs lit on the top row and 3 on the bottom this would indicate 35 for a signal strength.
Tune your system like a pro and keep the service call money in your pocket. When you buy the Trio II tune-up kit, we'll include everything you need from Aiming Data to a free compass. Read about it here.
3. The Skypeaker Trio has a tone that can be enabled by hitting the left and then right button. This allows you to listen to the tone rather than reading the LED display.
4. When dealing with MPEG or Digital signals, it is important to make sure that the feedhorn is in the middle of the dish and is collecting the maximum signal. This can be checked by measuring from 3 sides of the dish to the center of the feedhorn. You can also use a manual or laser focal finder. These will show exactly where the feedhorn is pointing and which way you would need to adjust the feedhorn. Both of these tools are available from Skyvision.
5. The manual and laser focal finders are designed to work with the majority of feedhorns. They may or may not fit snug on the feedhorn throat. If the fit is loose, you may need to use tape or plastic to make it fit better. Once the focal finder is in place, observe your focal point and then make the proper adjustments.
6. A common voltmeter is a handy meter that has multiple functions for your satellite system. Since a voltmeter can read ohms, you can test any cable or wire for continuity to make sure you have good wires and connections. A voltmeter can also measure the DC voltage that goes from the receiver out to the actuator (24 or 36 VDC). It can measure the 18 VDC that goes out on the coax cable to the LNB. Each voltmeter may be different so you will need to reference the manual that came with it. This is a muti-use tool that can be used for many other test functions around your home besides satellite systems.
7. A probe and tone tester is a device that injects a tone into a cable and lets you test from other locations if the tone is passing through the cable. This can be used to detect breaks in your underground cable. It also works well to trace the correct coax cable when multiple cables are coming into one location.
